CYFD Office of Children’s Rights Director
Eli Fresquez, Esq.
The New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department Cabinet Secretary Barbara J. Vigil convened a group of twenty-four diverse experts from the child welfare system to form a Steering Committee in June 2022 to provide CYFD with recommendations on how to make improvements related to CYFD.
Specifically, the group was asked to:
- Take an informed measure of the child welfare system in New Mexico, then use those insights to help CYFD enhance the delivery of services to the state’s children and families.
- Find ways for CYFD to respond to concerns our clients and constituents have raised, without bogging down its ability to serve them in unnecessary and cumbersome layers of bureaucracy.
The Steering Committee has provided CYFD with one overarching recommendation and 15 specific recommendations. Those recommendations — and the background information that ultimately led the group to provide those recommendations — are in the report.
